There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the dividing line from nearby Thailand, in which casino wagering is against the law. Eight gambling dens are established in a relatively small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent location, a three to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a huge business with Thai blue-collar workers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; although, financing sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are allegedly required to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is real of many border crossings.
The original Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau gambling hall, features one hundred and fifty slot machine games and sixty table games. The Naga river boat is open all day and night with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 slot machines and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and 66 of the normal table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international resort and hotel building that features many comforts in addition to the gambling den, which offers ten thousand square feet of one hundred and thirty slot machines and 88 gaming tables.
