Cambodia Casinos

[ English ]

There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling den gambling is against the law. Eight casinos are based in a relatively tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a prime area, a three to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular betting centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a couple of limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; still, investment sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are for all intents and purposes required to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most borders.

The 1st Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving only 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau casino, highlights 150 one armed bandits and sixty table games. The Naga casino is open all hours with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, four tables of twenty-one, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of 150 one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machines and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 96 table games, including 87 baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machine games and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel complex that contains numerous amenities accompanying the casino, which provides 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and 88 table games.
